Remark : Large numbers of Indians came to Malaya in the latter part of the 19th century either to work in the plantations or in the construction of roads and railways. Most of these (some 80%) were Tamils from Tamilnaldu or Sri Lanka. Many of these were Christians.

Consequently when the missionaries like the Reverend William Horley arrived in Ipoh, it was natural that the Tamil Christians should join them and it was not long before there were Tamils, mainly from Ceylon who themselves became missionaries and the Tamil Methodist movement was formed.

There were two Tamil Churches in Ipoh, the one pictured above and another in the Anglo-Chinese School compound. The one above was replaced by a new building, in 1997, which today is the largest Tamil Church in Malaysia with a seating capacity of 1000 people.
