Remark : The British servicemen who were stationed all over Malaya during the Emergency were always involved in assisting the local populace. In return, the Malayans formed very close bonds with their new found friends from across the oceans.

In Ipoh, the soldiers from the 12th Infantry Workshop REME (Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) used to visit the Main Convent orphanage from time to time. The sister’s in-charge of the orphanage were very kind to them and on Christmas week of 1956 they decided to run a Christmas party on their base for the orphans and their helpers.

From left to right the photographs show:

  • An aircraft making a low pass and trailing streamers, the aircraft is most likely an Auster.

  • The same aircraftfrom a different angle, the aircraft was most probably from the 656 Squadron that was based here in Ipoh.

  • Another view of the Auster, the streamers can be seen trailing the aircraft.
