Remark : The images above show a cutting from an unknown newpaper (possibly The Straits Times) in 2008, recording the passing of Captain Leong Ming Sen (MS) and a photograph of him as a young Malayan Airways pilot. Both images were provided by Sybil de Roquigny, great granddaughter of Towkay Leong Fee and niece of MS. Her maiden name was Sybil Wong Sui Mei.

Born in Ipoh in 1920, the second child but first born son of Leong Eng Khean and his second wife Chow Yoon Soo, MS was the grandson of Towkay Leong Fee. After primary and secondary education locally, he chose to major in economics at Hong Kong's Ling Nan University in 1941. However, the same year Hong Kong fell to the Japanese and he escaped to China's wartime capital Chungking. Here he joined China's only commercial airline, the China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC) as a trainee pilot.

His first routes as a qualified pilot took him over the dangerous foothills of the Himalayas, delivering supplies. From there he moved to join the "Flying Tigers", a squadron of Chinese and American volunteers who flew for China in their war against the Japanese invaders.

In 1945 when the war ended he returned to Malaya and being 'hooked' on flying joined Malayan Airways, becoming their first Asian First Officer in 1951.

In 1952 he chose to move on to what were known as the 'Newspaper Runs' delivering the Singapore Standard from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. After reaching the rank of Captain with the Federation Air Services he moved back to the renamed Malaysian Airways in 1963, again as a Pilot. That same year the airline became Malaysia-Singapore Airlines and then in 1972 split into two companies. MS decided to opt for the newly founded Singapore Airlines where he was a Captain on Boeing 737 aircraft. He retired in 1975 as Deputy Chief Pilot. However for MS, retirement did not mean leaving the aircraft world and for the next 12 years he became a Captain Trainer, training pilots to fly the 737.

Married to Diana, with two daughters, Leslie and Vicki and a son, Derrick, he was a family man, passionate about training local pilots to redress the imbalance between locals and expatriates in the industry. Overall he trained more than 200 pilots in his 12 years as a trainer.
