A View Of Batu Gajah Old Town
This photograph reproduced from "Sejarah Batu Gajah" shows the Old Town of Batu Gajah, where River Street meets the Kinta River.
Batu Gajah, an existing small village just south of Kampung Sungai Terap and around 21Km south of Ipoh, rose to prominence in 1881 when it was selected to serve as the river port for the Papan mines, to which it was joined by a four miles (6.5Km) of cart road. Land was sold to traders, who built shophouses along the River Street (Jalan Sungai) in what is known as Old Town (Pekan Lama) today.
