Eu Kong
Eu Kong migrated to Penang in 1876 taking up work as an assistant in a grocery shop and setting up the Yan Seng Chinese medicine shop in Gopeng in 1879. He returned to China in 1881 to bring up his son Eu Tong Sen. Within a year he returned to Malaya and with his son and a new wife he met on the voyage back. His new English speaking wife had good connections with local Chinese Baba families helping Eu Kong to build a productive relationship with the Assistant Magistrate in Gopeng. This put him in a good position to acquire and maintain government contracts and he soon became a successful tin miner. He went on to become the principal miner and Revenue Farmer of Gopeng. However, he met an untimely death age 38 reportedly murdered by a jealous husband.
