Eu Tong Sen's House, Gopeng
This photograph shows the house of Eu Tong Sen in Gopeng.
In 1898, he inherited the estate of his father Eu Kong and by age 30 (1907) was considered as one of the most opulent miners in the Federated Malay States, owning more than ten mines in Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, employing about 12,000 coolies.
From the 1900's onwards, Eu Tong Sen also established six Eu Yan Sang medical stores in Penang, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore, which grew to become the pharmaceutical empire of today.
Migrating to Hong Kong in 1928 he amassed a fortune from Real Estate and built magnificent villas for himself in Ipoh, Gopeng, Penang, Kampar, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong. He also imported the first motor car into Perak. The first Chinese member of the Federal Council of Malaya (1911-1920) there is much more to tell about this man and you will find it in the Kinta Valley book.
