The Eastern Smelting Company first started in 1898 as Seng Kee Smelter, owned by miner Lee Chin Ho, but changed hands several times over the years.
In 1907 it was floated as a Limited Liability Company, by Lee Chin Ho, in the name of The Eastern Smelting Company (trademark Escoy).
