Remark : The photographs show :

On the left is the overspill from the chapel. With the building and garden completely packed, worshippers line the verge on the other side of Tambun Road.

Centre and right are two scans of the decorations set up in honour of the feast day of Our Mother Mary.

Ken Chan remembers the chapel fondly :

"As I retrace the footprints in the sand that are blurred by the passage of time, my faltering memory flashed back to my church-going days in the mid 60's. For many of us, attending services in this graceful building was more than an affirmation of our religious convictions. Fueled by raging hormones, many teenagers seek out their hot dates and stroll hand-in-hand to attend mass on Saturday evenings in these stately grounds. There, they pour out their inner most feelings, seeking divine intervention to help navigate the treacherous seas of 'puppy' love.

Come exam time, the place would be teeming with students who come to procure salvation from the Almighty, hoping to gain that extra impetus to pass the next grueling test. Those who have wasted too much time goofing around in class, swore that this last minute push in their moment of desperation does help.

Many who were genuinely in need of spiritual guidance in their darkest hour congregated there to seek solace. Heartwarming stories abound about those that felt enriched and rewarded by the experience; gaining strength, inspiration and a sense of purpose in the process.

Ipoh's 'Novena' church may have been obliterated from the face of the earth but, in our mind, it still holds the key to a treasure trove of sacred memories."
