Remark :

The barbers chair, above left, is typical of those that replaced the old traditional pre-war wooden chairs. At the time they were the latest in barbering technology. Manufactured by the Takara company in Japan (who had been manufacturing the earlier models since 1930) and assembled here in Ipoh, this is probably one of their first hydraulic chairs as production of theseonly started in 1950.

The Takara Belmont website provides the following information:

"Takara Belmont Corporation, the World Leader in Salon and Spa Manufacturing and Design, as well as the Worldwide Leader in Dental Equipment Manufacturing was founded in Japan in 1921 by Mr. Hidenobu Yoshikawa. We have been an innovator and leader in the Beauty and Dental markets throughout our history and have grown to be a world-class company in all of the markets in which we have entered. We at Takara Belmont USA, Inc. take tremendous pride in our rich and long history which makes us strong, reliable, and here to stay."

With the onset of HIV and AIDS there were great concerns regarding the use of the traditional cut-throat razor. Consequently a new open razor came on the market with replaceable blades. No longer did the barber need his leather strop to sharpen his razor! Four examples of these are in the centre image above.

Traditionally hair clippers were hand operated, but as in everything else electricity changed all that and electric clippers with different size combs became the order of the day. Some examples are shown above right.
