Remark :

According to our donor - Wendy Lewis - her father Alfred Simon was the Superintendent of the Perak Hydro Power Station in Malim Nawar. In the first picture, Alfred Simon is the gentleman on the left; next to him is none other than the Sultan of Perak - Sultan Idris Al-Mutawakil Allahi Shah. The General Manager of the plant was Peter Channer (from what our donor recalls).

In the third picture, the person in the dark suit (extreme right) is most probably Douglas Hemnell - the last DGM of Perak Hydro; the last GM was said to be Mr Medlycot. We thank Charlie Choong for this information; incidentally Charlie's aunt married Douglas Hemnell.

Other Blog Readers have also shared some information about this power plant in Malim Nawar.

  • Pritam used to live at Malim Nawar and was a childhood friend of our donor. Her father Naranjan Singh was at Engineer at Perak Hydro Power Station. Pritam, her sister Nirmala (Nimmi), Audrey Rowlands, and Wendy studied at St Bernadette's Convent.
  • Raymond Ng's father Ng Nam Sang was the Assistant Superintendent Engineer. The Ng family lived at bungalow No. 4 while Wendy Lewis' family lived at bungalow No. 1. Raymond recalls there being a Perak Hydro Social club across the road from his family home (bungalow No. 4). There was a badminton court and staff living quarters. The Club was looked after by 2 Indian chefs (1950s-1960s) until they retired; Thomas Wong, a Perak Hydro staff member, took over later. Raymond also mentions a small shop in the Kongsi, his driver named Krishnan and an electrician named Gopal. Sadly the Perak Hydro Station fell into disrepair in the late 1980s.
