Remark :

This photograph shows a boring team in the mid-20th century.

Around 1898, prospecting for tin by boring had suddenly become very popular among Chinese miners due to the proven (by the government) superiority of scientific methods.

Normally, a prospecting team would venture into a potential tin mine area with a boring set to identify the composition of tin in the land, before opening the mine, thereby reducing the risk of mine owners venturing into unprofitable land. The boring by a hollow pipe and boring set produced a cylinder of the earth from ground level to the maximum depth of the bore and enabled on-site assessment of the percentage of tin in the soil and at what depth from the surface it laid.
