Cheong Chee's Mansion (1)
These are pictures of an abandoned mansion which once belonged to Towkay Cheong Chee.

"This grand pre-war bungalow was built by Cheong Chee, a Chinese migrant who built his fortune from tin and rubber. The castle-like appearance was inspired by Buckingham Palace and the roof of bright green glazed Italian tiles made it a distinct landmark of Ipoh. If I’m not mistaken, it served as Head-quarters for the Japanese during their occupation in WW-II. The bungalow was rented out to Kok Kee in the 70s. Being from Ipoh, I’ve attended so many banquets here. Its such a shame seeing pictures of it now in ruins."

"Cheong Chee, the former owner of the house, was my grandfather. My mother grew up in that house. I live in America and visited it once when I was nine years old and the Cheong Chee clan still lived there. It was indeed used as headquarters for the Japanese during the occupation of WW II. Stories abound that the ghosts of those tortured and executed there still roam the grounds. I certainly heard strange sounds there during my visit. My cousins seemed very casual about it, so either they had gotten accustomed to the ghosts or were playing tricks on their American cousin!"

"I’m Lisa’s cousin, and my mother grew up in the house. I believe that it is on the registry of historical properties. The furniture store went up in the front of it, but because of the registry, the owners were unable to tear the house down, thus the store went up in front of it."
