Remark : A page from Dato Seri Yuen Yuet Leng’s album, in which he explains the ambush attempt on himself near Ayer Kala that went all wrong.
In September 1954, an Ipoh Cigarette Company vehicle was mistakenly fired at by Communist Terrorists (CTs) who thought that it was the DSBO of Grik returning to Lenggong that afternoon. It was learnt that the CTs made their apologies to the Cigarette Company and the driver of the vehicle who was badly injured in the incident. Later investigations by the SB revealed the intended target in the said ambush was the DSBO Yuen himself.
Mun Choy, the Commander of the 7th Independent Platoon who had led the ambush party earlier, surrendered to the Field Force and joined the Special Branch unit with D/Cpl Choo Chan.
In 1966, both Choo Chan and Mun Choy were killed in a major CT ambush in the Bentong area.
From top to bottom the photographs show:
The Lenggong/Grik Road at the 77th mile, the site of the attempted ambush with an inset of DCM Tai Lim.
The ambushed vehicle and a view of the road from the ambush point.
A spontaneous check by the Special Branch of suspected or known helpers of the Communists.
