Remark : Reverend Brother Finan, joined SMI as Director in January 1936, replacing Brother Dositheus, and he steered St Michael's through the depression years of 1936 and 1937, being replaced by Brother Director Marcian in January 1938. He was a capable and strict educationalist and placed great emphasis on studies before other diversions.
However, this was an unusually short appointment, at his own request, as his term of office had been marred by his being forced by an order from the education authorities to close down two extra classes, which had been formed by the previous Director. These pupils could not be absorbed into the ‘official’ classes as then SMI was a one-stream school with all classes from Primary One to the Senior Class (Form V) under a single management. The closing of these classes caused grievous offence to the families of the affected pupils, but Brother Finan had no choice but to bow to government policy. He therefore decided to move on to a new posting and a new start.
