Published By : None
Location : Malaya
Estimated Year : 1958
Media Type : Photograph

Remark : From left to right the photographs show:

  • The photograph shows all the completed packs that are ready to be transported to the aircraft. There were protective sleeves called percussion heads tied onto each pack. These percussion heads were filled with coir-fibre: a product that is found between the husk and the outer shell of a coconut. The coir-fibre is relatively water-proof and is one of the few natural fibres that are resistant to damage by saltwater. The photograph shows only 50% of the packing shed’s contents.

  • This photograph shows a 55 Company RASC truck being loaded with packs that are to be air dropped to the various forts and patrols in the jungles of Malaya.

  • The large wooden crate in the picture contains eight tins of Avgas or aviation gasoline. These tins were individually packed in coir-fibre in order to prevent friction when the crates arrive at the drop zone by parachute. There were times where Avgas containers had exploded upon hitting the ground. The delivery in the picture was destined to a fort for the refuelling of helicopters, Austers and Pioneers.
