Location : Batu Gajah, Perak

Remark : Despite the dangers of deep mining pools, treachorous waterfalls and communist terrorists during the Malayan Emergency, young people were often out and about in the 1950s, enjoying their freedom with apparently few reports of accidents.

In this series of photographs a group from Batu Gajah are enjoying a visit to a Batu Gajah mining pool for relaxation, swimming and a spot of fishing. The photographs show, from left to right, top to bottom:

  • Standing (left to right): Ho Hoo Wan, Loh Koon Hoi, Ho Khong Ming, Wan Mei Heng, Khi Yin Peng.

Sitting (left to right): Chin Kim Moi, Thong Kai Chan.

  • The boys in the group with Ho Hoo Wan second from left.

  • Another group photo.

  • The solitary fisherman deep in thought.

  • Ho Hoo Wan, our donor is the grandson of Ho Yuk Phooi, a well known name in Batu Gajah.
