Ipoh Municipal Council
From newspaper cuttings:
New Strait Times, 27-05-1988: Last Ipoh council meeting - Ipoh town has had a long and colorful history since the Ipoh Sanitary Board was establish in March 1893, to look into the development and welfare of the town.
Ipoh was accorded municipal status in March 1962. Menteri Besar, who is the Council President, Datuk Seri Ramli Ngah Talib was highly praised for his efforts in bringing progress to Ipoh.
The Ipoh Municipal Council has had a president and a deputy. With conferment to “Ipoh City”
Status, both posts have been abolished to make way for a Datuk Bander(Mayor). So the Menteri Besar ceased to being the Council President, but he assured he will continue to take an interest in the development of Ipoh, the cleanliness of Ipoh and to make Ipoh a more beautiful city to attract tourists.
The last Ipoh Council meeting today lasted an hour, ended on a resounding note with those present, giving Datuk Seri Ramli a standing ovation for a job well done.
New Straits Times, 28-05-1988: Ipoh is the first city to be inaugurated under the Local Government Act that caters for the management of local authorities.
Ipoh City now has a City Council headed by a mayor, who will be assisted by a 24-member council. The mayor decide what he wants to do for the city and to get the consensus of the councillors. The councillors assist the mayor in arriving at decisions and formulating policies and meets at least once a month. The role of the council is to meet and resolve matters. They have legal complications as they approve and reject thing like applications to the council.
With this change of status from Ipoh Municipal Council to Ipoh City Council, the Ipoh Municipal Councillors automatically become City Councillors. They will have to be sworn in at the first City Council meeting.
This city status would act as a catalyst for Ipoh to grow even more rapidly. Tracing Ipoh’s history one cannot help but marvel at the growth of a city council from the initial Ipoh Sanitary Board(1893), District Board (1916), Town Council (1957) and Municipal Council (1962), City Council (on27-5-1988)!
Ipoh is the first town to be declared a city under the Local Government Act 1976.
