Towkay Leong Ker Rau (Pinyin, Liong Ke Rou) Aka Liong Dian
Arriving in Malaya from Mei Xian, Guandong, China at age 17, Ker Rau started working as an "apprentice" in a tin mine. Not just a basic coolie, he was allowed by his employer to gain a wide experience in the different aspects of mining. This allowed him to eventually open his first tin mine in Menglembu in partnership with others. The endeavour was called the Dong Ying Tin Mining Company which became very successful. At one stage the mine held the record for the production of tin with a yield of 4,000 to 5,000 Dan per month. One Dan equates to 50Kg.
A dedicated philanthropist, Ker Rau donated 3 acres of development land in Pasir Puteh to the Perak Ka Yin Association in Ipoh, of which he was a prominent member, and Chairman from 1946 to 1949.
He had a large family of 9 sons and 9 daughters, the eldest daughter being Liong Wan Ching who became Puan Sri Lee Loy Seng, the wife of Towkay Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng, himself a famous tin miner, rubber plantation owner and philanthropist.
