Dredge Tin Tables
This picture shows tin tables inside the dredge where workers separate tin ore from the washdirt by using large amounts of running water in separate bays in a similar way to the open-cast mining Palong. In this picture the water is flowing steadily and the tin, being heavier than the water and washdirt is being left behind as it reaches the baffles. The labourers are busily manipulating the specialist long handled hoes (changkols), with the heads at an acute (less than 90 degrees) angle, essential for working the ore in this situation.
This crude method of separation was replaced in later dredges by revolving screens and jigs.
