St Michael’s Institution (SMI) – A New Era, Mr Chong Suan Ee, The First Lay Principal For 70 Years.
Mr Chong was the first lay Principal of SMI since P J Morsingh retired 70 years earlier. He joined SMI in January 1989, replacing Brother Vincent, the last of 12 La Sallian Brothers to hold the post as Brother Director (Principal).
Chong was a specialist in the teaching of Living Skills and Geography and set the groundwork for the introduction of Living Skills into the curriculum and put in motion the idea of a new “Living Skills’ building which came to fruition almost 10 years later and long after his retirement in 1991.
