The Committee Of The Perak Anti-Opium Society
This photograph shows the committee of the Perak Anti-Opium Society. The Society was formed in 1906, when the Nanyang Chinese leaders changed their attitudes towards the legitimacy of the opium business, supporting the Chinese Emperor's decree forbidding the use of opium throughout his empire.
The chairman of the Perak branch of the Society was Dr Connolly. The first Anti-Opium Conference for the Straits Settlements and the Federated Malay States was held in Ipoh in March 1907, and attended by 3,000 people. Practically all the support came from the wealthy Chinese, led by the Society's patron Foo Choo Choon.
