The Lam Looking Building Showing The Celestial Hotel And Dance Hall
This photograph courtesy of Yong Hon Seng, shows the Celestial Hotel and Dance Hall occupying the second and third floors of the Lam Looking Building above the Lam Looking Bazaar. It was built as a stylish Art Deco building to the design of Danish architect Berthel Michael Iversen and the building started 1931. It featured sweeping horizontal lines, with Early Modernist stair-wells.
Lam Look Ing, a Nam Wei Cantonese, was born in Penang in 1864. Trained as a naval officer in Foochou, he established himself as a tin-miner in Kampar and a large property owner in Ipoh.
