Barber's Shop Tools (5) - The Steriliser
At one time in Malaya all barbers would have had a steriliser for their instruments and towels. In modern Malaysia this practice has fallen by the wayside!
This particular steriliser, 1.6 metres high and 42 cm maximum width, was originally fired by kerosene and then converted to electricity which indicates it is probably much older than 1948 as electricity cam to Ipoh in the 1930s. The original owner tells us that it was brought from a small kampung when the family were moved into Simee as part of the New Village Strategy of British General Sir Harold Briggs, Director of Operations in the anti-communist war in Malaya.
The original purpose of the New Villages was to segregate the villagers from the early Malayan Races Liberation Army insurgents, which were led by the Malayan Communist Party, during the Malayan Emergency.
