12th Infantry Regiment Workshop REME 1955-57 (1)
This is the first part of a series of pictures from Alan Steel. Alan once served in the 12th Infantry Regiment Workshop REME, at Gunong Panjang (Gunung Panjang), Ipoh. The pictures show:
- Graham Barton (who served with Alan) by the entrance of the camp
- The 12th Infantry Camp gates and Gunong Panjang (background)
- Fire point, with water tower and bashas behind
- Ancillary workshop view from the water tower
- Armoured vehicle workshop, with corner of stores and offices, from water tower
- Wilkinson Road, seen from the back seat of a bus. According to Alan, this was the road leading from Gunong Panjang to Tambun Road, close to where the motorway interchange is now.
Ipoh Remembered added:
Wilkinson Road and Tambun Road were perpendicular to one another.
Just before you leave Ipoh via Tambun Road, there was, and still is, a military camp on your left. The left turn off Tambun Road leading into the camp was Wilkinson Road. It’s still there. I suspect it’s a lot less pretty these days, and I have no idea what they call it, but you can locate it on a map at 4.607N, 101.127E.
