Location : Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1930
Media Type : Artifact
Source : Ian Anderson, Ipoh / Kinta Properties Group
Remark :

This is a very plain and simple bamboo opium pipe such as would have been used by the poorer smoker or coolie in the opium dens. The richer smokers often had their own beautifully carved pipes made from jade, decorated porcelain or other exotic materials, often embellished with silver or gold. These would be used at home or taken to the comfortable opium parlours. The only 'style' that this particular pipe boasts is the jade end and mouthpiece which are believed to be much older than the bamboo portion and fitted to the replacement pipe when the original wore out or was damaged. The opium pipe is 44cm long. It would have been used with a damper.
